Female Entrepreneur of the Year 2011 – Miramichi Region
Ten years ago, Genesis Salon and Spa “A Place for New Beginnings” was a dream come true for Sherry. She was now able to provide all of the services loved by women under one roof. Over the past 10 years, Sherry has grown from hairstyling and aesthetics to registered massage therapy and laser hair removal with a staff of 20 professionals filling the positions of 8 stylists, 8 aestheticians, 1 Registered Massage Therapist, and 3 receptionists.
Genesis Salon and Spa is a place for health, beauty and wellness and a place that's keenly attuned to how people live today. She is passionate about meeting the needs of her clients and driven to set new standards of excellence.
Not only is Sherry the owner of a successful Salon and Spa but she is also a valued and committed member of our community. Sherry serves the children’s ministry and youth group of the United Baptist church as well a coordinator for the Prayer Vigil. She was a coordinator of the Recovery Program that opened the doors for other similar program start-ups. These programs assist people with addictions and recovery battles.
Sherry is a current member of the Miramichi Chamber of Commerce and the Women’s Entrepreneurial Network.
With the help of a spa consultant, Sherry renovated a century old residential home in the downtown area. She feels that “being a business owner is having a vision, and staying focused and committed to that vision.” She leads a great staff of 20 employees. They contribute tremendously to the vision and together have made Genesis prosperous. For Sherry, being a small business owner has been a rewarding experience, professionally and personally.
Sherry also shared her thoughts on the importance of her occupation. “They say that in my occupation as a hairstylist that it is 5% styling the hair and 95% psychiatry. After almost 20 years in this industry, I have dealt with clients experiencing death, divorce, birth, menopause, and everything in between. I have learned to be a good listener, and frequently people will seek my counsel. My objective is to send my guests out the door feeling better than when they arrived.”
In 2001, Sherry prepared a 2 year business plan for a full service salon and spa. Her business plan included a description of the business, the nature of the industry, products and services, market trends, competitive advantages, start-up costs of renovations, stock and equipment and a projection of revenue and expenditures. The business plan assisted in receiving the required start-up funding. Sherry then had to have the residential property re-zoned to commercial. In the end, she was successful and began the life of Genesis Salon & Spa.
As many small business owners, Sherry is the Manager, Director of Human Resources, Book Keeper, Accountant, Director of Marketing and Advertising. With owning a business, Sherry like all entrepreneurs wears many hats, spends countless hours perfecting her product, her service and her business.
Along with her personal community involvement, it was natural for Sherry to donate time and services from her salon to cut hair in support of cancer in partnership with Relay for Life. This is something that Genesis Salon & Spa has been doing for many years. Sherry is also a member of the Miramichi Chamber of Commerce and the Women’s Entrepreneurial Network.
The meaning of Entrepreneur is “a person who is willing to help launch a new venture or enterprise and accept full responsibility for the outcome”. Sherry has taken many risks. Not only with her position as owner of Genesis Salon and Spa, but with many things in this great community of Miramichi. While taking these risks, some being successful and some not, she does not get discouraged. Sherry is a positive inspiration. She is not afraid to try new innovative ideas to make her company, her employees and her community better.
We are proud to have Sherry as a member of our Women of Miramichi Entrepreneurial Network and look forward to her future success. In celebration of your ten year anniversary, congratulations on a job well done.
