Mavis Williamson, Brunswick Driver Training Ltd.

What is the biggest social element and right of passage for young adults? Getting their driver’s license, that is. Located in Chatam, Miramichi, New Brunswick, Mavis Williamson of Brunswick Driver Training Ltd. is educating our young drivers to be safe on New Brunswick roads.

Born in Ontario, Mavis Williamson’s husband was in the military and got stationed in Chatam. The duo enjoyed the region and as a personal choice, decided to make it their home. With an Account Certificate from Seneca College, and many years of experience, Mavis saw a business opportunity and has never turned back. Like her favourite quote, “If you never try, you’ll never know. If you never know, you’ll never grow.”

This entrepreneur’s personal mandate is as an educator, so she needs to meet specific standards as an instructor and an operator. From her spacious classroom that is conducive to learning, to the (three full-time and one part-time) seasoned instructors and the four cars where students learn to drive; Brunswick Driver Training Ltd. is a first class business.

“It is a fast-paced business, as there is a lot of material to cover, “describes Mavis. “My entrepreneurial drive comes from seeing an opportunity to offer a service. I love working with youth and I enjoy business. The time to open a business for me was appropriate as my children (Jason and Colleen) were in their teens. The bonus is too, that my husband is supportive.”

Brunswick Driver training Ltd. is set-apart from its competitors by the credibility the business has in the community, the quality service provided, the solid foundation built for students and the personalized service it provides. For example, Mavis considers ergonomics and works with those students who may have either cognitive or physical challenges. Mavis also ensures she is active in the business and that all aspects are looked after to have a “tight-clean organization.”

Not being from the area is also an advantage for Mavis. She comes into business with no bias therefore, treats every one the same, ensuring all students have a positive experience. “It is an ideal learning environment. Every one wants their license!” With a positive attitude and friendly demeanour, students find Mavis to be very approachable.

If Mavis could impart wisdom on aspiring entrepreneurs: “You have to be prepared as much as you can, but there will be things that you will miss. If family is involved, you need to find balance and believe in the same goals. Furthermore, when you are self-employed, you tap employees on the back. You have to be prepared to not have encouragement; it is not the same accolade.”

Giving back to the community is important for Mavis. She is currently president of the Historic Chatam Business District, past-president of Skate Canada NB and supports the Miramichi Turkey Drive. Mavis is also happy to see all of the thriving businesses run by women in the Miramichi area.

When Mavis has spare time, she enjoys ATVing and takes a winter and summer vacations to make sure her batteries are recharged. This October, she will also receive a degree from Mount Allison University, a personal endeavour that she enjoyed.

Visit www.brunswickdrivertraining.com for more information on how Mavis can help young students to transition into safe drivers.

"I would like to thank you for picking Ben's Clothing for the retail consulting makeover.  I very much enjoyed talking to Barbara.  She has wonderful insites on what to do to refresh my store.  I was extremly excited of the ideas put together thats in my budget for now and also in the near future.

The 1st part of the seminar, had opened my eyes to the reality of my challenges and concerns, statistics, operating cost and marketing which is a huge part that can not be ignored. It's a must to have a list of issues to know it and control it.  This is a large part of my battles that I face but placed them in the back burner.

When Barbara came into my store I wasn't sure what to expect because in the seminar she was leaning towards makeovers for a new store or toronto style store.  I had no idea that a little bit of paint in a different color will bring out what I want to promote.  She had alot of new ideas that are in the budget and I'm going to make it happen!

Thank you again for filling me in with the seminars that are offered.  I'm always willing to get informed and always moving forward."
