Sherry Sturgeon, Genesis Salon & Spa

If you are seeking a tranquil oasis to escape the busy world surrounded by business meetings and Blackberry’s, make Genesis Salon & Spa, located in the Miramichi, New Brunswick your next destination. Owned and operated by Sherry Sturgeon, this “preventative” state of the art Aveda facility has a world class feel. The friendly and knowledgeable staff ensures that clients leave feeling refreshed, calm and pampered.

Owner, Sherry Sturgeon has always had the “entrepreneurial spirit.” Having worked in her mother’s salon for years, Sherry accomplished the goal to have her own business by the age 30. Having bought the property at the age of twenty-nine, Sherry opened Genesis’ doors in 2001 and it has been on a steady growth path ever since.

Opening a business is never easy and Sherry met some challenges head on. It took two years to launch the business since purchasing it with the vast array of business planning, research and financing that comes with the territory. “It was the hardest thing I have ever done,” said this savvy entrepreneur.

From a staff of seven in its opening year, to 21 at present day, running a salon and spa is “fast paced.” But, the fast paced is just happening behind the scenes from the service providers point of view.

When asked what sets Genesis apart from other salon and spas, Sherry responds, “I feel we are special, I believe we are the best.” This positive attitude transcends to all of her employees. Sherry takes human resource management very seriously. She believes in inclusion, using professional conduct and works to create a “family environment” with her staff. Sherry certainly knows this first hand as she has worked with her mother for the past 20 years.

Furthermore, Sherry’s personal philosophy of holistic mind and body approach is an absolute fit with the Aveda principle. Aveda is based on the 5000 year-old Ayurvedic system of alternative medicine that is native to India and practiced in various parts in the world. The Aveda experience is one of touching, essential oils, anointing, and is truly spiritual.

Nadine Duguay, development officer for women and youth for the NB Association of CBDCs attests, “Having been to a spa in Cannes, France, I have never had a better experience then at Genesis, right here in the Miramichi. Nothing even comes close.”

Some of the delightful services that Genesis offers but are not limited to include; hair, facial, pedicure, body wraps, massages and manicures. Genesis also has a variety of products that can also be purchased such as special shampoos, conditioners and hair treatments. “I am selective and stand by my products. Too many businesses focus too much on products.”

If Sherry could give advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, she says, “You have to be willing to give of yourself 24/7. It is a huge commitment and sometimes there is no balance.” A best practice that this busy woman in business implements is treating every one a “divine appointment.” She believes that every one is there for a reason and there is always a teaching principle.

When Sherry is not giving her 200 percent to Genesis, she has time to help out in the community. “Being a business owner, I am able to do things in the community and lend my business name and reputation in support and recognition.” Sherry works with celebrate Recovery, a 25 week 12-step addiction program, is actively involved in her church and sits on the Board of Directors for the Chamber of Commerce and as chairperson for the community clean-up initiative.
On support from Nadine Duguay of the NB Association of CBDCs and the recent launch of WOMEN, Sherry says, “I believe it brings awareness. It makes you proud to be a woman entrepreneur, it is important.”

“When I met the NB Association of CBDC’s they were willing to help and give advice, that’s when I really felt like I had made the choice by opening this business in New Brunswick. You just don’t get that attention in bigger cities.” In Toronto for example there may not have been an economic development agency that is eager for you to open your own business.
