If you are looking to have an anniversary party, corporate event, a wedding and so much more, you can count on Nancy Curtis of Perfect Parties by Nancy to take the worry out of your special day and make it fun-filled. Nancy is a personal events planner, located in Fredericton who has been in business since 1996. She specializes in birthdays, anniversaries and corporate Christmas parties. Nancy also plans weddings and organizes the Wedding Show held at the Delta Fredericton every year. Originally from Blackville, N.B., Nancy has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario and an Education degree from UNB (not aspiring to teach but to learn transferable skills). She began her career in the hospitality sector, worked for a not-for-profit, then into co-ordinating training programs for the hospitality sector and later into politics. It was after that, when someone suggested she create her own employment that the rest is history… Nancy saw her business opportunity when she recognized that many people enjoy the notion of planning an event, but find that the execution is challenging. Nancy takes care of all details from hiring the photographer to the décor as well as working very closely with her clients. She is very hands on and there is little that she has not experienced over the years. Her motto of “If you cannot do it right, do not attempt it,” helps to ensure that each event is special and memorable. Nancy says the independence, flexibility, positive feedback and referrals are some of the many advantages of being a business owner. Working from home and being on call 24/7 and the lack of regular pay would be some of the challenges. She would suggest to aspiring entrepreneurs to: “Ask yourselves why you are in business? Is it to make money or not? Though it helps to have passion for what you do, you need to consider your business as a career.” Furthermore, “Build relationships, learn how things work and do not put yourself above anyone.” Nancy is an active member of WBN Greater Fredericton and credits the NB Association of CBDCs for helping her attend the Women in Business Conference in Newfoundland on two separate occasions. There, she was able to network and make many contacts. In addition, she received much advice and support from Enterprise Fredericton. This dynamic entrepreneur enjoys golfing, travelling, being active in her church and supporting the Canadian Deaf Blind Rubella Association (CDBRA).
